Marty Mornhinweg Deserves Share Of The Blame

As hope for the Philadelphia Eagles has faded before Thanksgiving, fans around the city have grown increasingly apathetic.  It's not that people don't care, it's that they're angry.  Everything about this team has gotten on our last nerve.  The constant talk of doing a "better job," the comments from players like Jason Babin, and the general lack of reality surrounding the majority of the roster have all contributed to the disaster that is the 2012 Eagles.  Obviously, anything short of major change at the end of the season is unacceptable.  That means the end of the Andy Reid era is drawing near, and you can count me among the massive number of fans that feel happy about that.  However, one thing that bothers me is the lack of criticism involving "offensive guru" Marty Mornhinweg.  It's time he gets what's coming to him.

Don't get me wrong...Andy is ultimately to blame for everything.  Sure, the offensive line is a shell of what it once was, and the players deserve accountability.  However, Andy is paid the big bucks to be the head coach.  At the end of the day, he is responsible for everything.  Given the fact that this team is a train wreck in nearly every aspect of the game, it's time for him to go.  Odds are his coaching staff will leave with him, but there are a number of people out there that say that Mornhinweg should stay.  The argument is that Andy is telling him which plays to call.  That could be true, but I don't see how that's an endorsement for him.  Either Mornhinweg is calling the plays, or he's sitting idly by while someone else does his job.  Regardless of what is true, he needs to go.

Once upon a time, the Eagles used to throw the ball deep.  That hasn't happened in 2012.  Despite having a number of impressive players at the skill positions, the Eagles have failed to score points.  They managed just 13 points against the New Orleans Saints, a team with a defense that is likely to finish as the worst in league history.  Yes, the line is partly to blame.  Yes, Michael Vick has been on his back after almost every play.  But if we know that, Marty should know it too.  Instead of adapting and adjusting, he's allowing Vick to throw the ball way more than he should.  Even when Nick Foles came in against the Dallas Cowboys, the offensive game plan didn't change.  The Eagles continually waste their skill players, most notable LeSean McCoy.  It's clear that Andy has the philosophy of going to the air, but his offensive coordinator is doing nothing to help matters.  I can't imagine that Mornhinweg just stands there and lets Andy read every situation.  He's failing at his job just as much as Juan Castillo did, if not more.  When the axe falls in the offseason, I fully expect Mornhinweg to be under it right after the head coach and the quarterback.
